Wanderers Remember the Fallen!
Over 100 were present at the 108th Annual Dinner of the Middlesex Wanderers in a Gala Dinner in London’s Regent Park.
This year’s Dinner had two themes : a celebration of non League football and a commemoration of the footballers who lost their lives fighting for King and Country in WW1. Middlesex Wanderers lost 12 members while its Scottish ‘ brother’ club, Queen’s Park in Glasgow saw 216 members enlist of whom 28 perished in the conflict. At 9pm a toast was made to the fallen and Sergt Dave Coleman of the Royal Engineers played the Last Post.
The Guest of Honour was the legendary Dave ‘Harry’ Bassett In an amusing speech he recounted stories from his long career in football both as a player (he made over 150 appearances for Wimbledon won the FA Amateur cup with Walton and Hersham and played 10 times for England Amateurs) and as a manager of Wimbledon, Watford, Sheffield United, Crystal Palace, Nottingham Forest, Barnsley, Leicester City, Southampton and Leeds United. ‘ Arry’ was followed by the well-known after dinner speaker and entertainer Howard Smith who kept everyone laughing as he told joke after joke.
The club celebrated winning the Ryman’s Isthmian League Veteran’s Cup which was presented to Captain Steve Ward and his team.
Later this season the club will be touring Scotland playing two matches including a fixture against Queen’s Park. In 2016 the club will tour Ghana on what will be its 100th overseas tour
